Nestled on the corner of Poquito Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Bennu proves to be a quaint, eclectic space ideal for quiet conversation, concentrated studying, or afternoon escapism—preferably with a good book. With its funky photography and colorful pop-art decorating the walls by local artists, Bennu captures the culture of the East Austin vibe. The locally-owned coffee shop offers a variety of seating options (small and large tables, couches, bar seating, etc –all mixed matching), creating an inviting, homey atmosphere with the help of its mellow lighting, brown, green, and maroon tones, friendly, knowledgeable staff, rich coffee smell, and chill indie background music.
My friend, Kaitie, and I met at Bennu to study together at about 10:30am today, and we easily found a table and ordered with almost no wait. She got one of their iced specialty drinks, while I just played it classic with a cup of joe, a light Nicaraguan blend, which proved to be quite pleasant. I’ve been here before and also enjoyed their loose leaf tea selection. They have a much wider selection of coffee drinks, and seem to be known for their mocha coffee drinks and then their option to use the personal French presses to press any of their fair trade beans. Bennu has also has started serving food throughout the day from various local Austin hotspots. Examples include tacos from Torchy’s, salads from Fricano’s, pizzas from Hoboken Pie, sandwich wraps from The Green Cart, and more. They also have a yummy assortment of pastries and a nice selection of Odwalla drinks.
As a grad student in the midst of papers galore, I really appreciate how Bennu accommodates those coming here to work by offering power outlets everywhere, even coming down from the ceiling. I didn’t see a seat in the house that couldn’t reach one. Another perk, the place is open 24/7 –perfect for students during finals or the typical night owl. I suppose it goes without saying that the place is free wifi.
Just a few bocks East of UT, Bennu’s central location and neighborhood-coffee-shop attitude makes it highly recommendable for all. Check out their website at:
